The short answer: a full-grown Cavoodle usually weighs 4โ12 kg and stands 25โ38 cm at the shoulder. Toys land at 4โ7 kg, Minis at 7โ12 kg, and Standards go from 12 kg up. Most reach their adult size by 12 months.
Choco here ๐พ I'm an apricot toy poodle, which makes me a Cavoodle's cousin โ same curls, same haircut, same "wait, where did my dog go?" moment after a groom. So I get asked this a lot: how big is my Cavoodle going to get, and what on earth size do I buy for them?
Let's sort out both.
๐ Toy, Mini or Standard โ what's the difference?
First thing to know: the Cavoodle is a crossbreed, so there's no official breed standard the way there is for a Labrador. The name on the ad โ Toy, Mini, Standard โ comes down to which size Poodle the breeder used. That's it. ๐งฌ
| Type | Adult weight | Adult height (at the shoulder) | Poodle parent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy Cavoodle | 4โ7 kg | 25โ30 cm | Toy Poodle |
| Mini Cavoodle | 7โ12 kg | 30โ38 cm | Miniature Poodle |
| Standard Cavoodle | 12 kg and up | 38 cm and up | Standard Poodle |
Treat these as guide ranges, not promises. Two pups from the same litter can finish 2 kg apart, and the Cavalier side pulls things around too.
๐ When do Cavoodles stop growing?
Most Cavoodles hit their adult weight somewhere between 10 and 12 months. The fast stretch is months 3 to 6 โ they practically double. After that it slows right down and they just fill out. ๐ช
| Age | Toy | Mini | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks | 0.8โ1.2 kg | 1.2โ1.8 kg | 1.5โ2.2 kg |
| 3 months | 1.5โ2.2 kg | 2.5โ3.5 kg | 3โ4.5 kg |
| 4 months | 2.2โ3.2 kg | 3.5โ5 kg | 4.5โ6 kg |
| 6 months | 3.5โ5 kg | 5โ7 kg | 7โ9 kg |
| 9 months | 4.5โ6 kg | 6โ9 kg | 9โ11 kg |
| 12 months | 5โ7 kg | 7โ10 kg | 10โ12 kg |
The quick trick: weigh them at 16 weeks and multiply by 2.5. It's not exact, but it gets you close enough to know whether you're buying for a 6 kg dog or an 11 kg one. ๐งฎ
โ Why Cavoodle owners buy more clothes than most
Here's the thing nobody mentions at the breeder's: that gorgeous curly coat is one haircut away from nothing. ๐ฏ
A Cavoodle in full coat looks warm. A Cavoodle three days after a summer clip is a small, bare, slightly offended dog standing on a cold kitchen floor at 6am. I know, because that's me most of the year.
Cavoodles feel the cold more than their fluff suggests because:
- The curls get clipped short every 6โ8 weeks, and the clip takes the insulation with it โ
- They're small โ less body mass means heat goes faster ๐ก
- They're indoor dogs with thin tummies and short legs close to cold floors ๐ฅถ
- Puppies and seniors regulate their temperature worse than adults ๐ง
Watch for shivering, curling into a tight ball, or planting themselves on the sunny patch of carpet and refusing to move. That's a dog asking for a layer.
๐งต What size clothes does a Cavoodle need?
Don't buy by breed. Buy by tape measure. Two Mini Cavoodles the same weight can be completely different shapes โ one barrel-chested, one skinny.
You need three numbers, in cm:
- Chest girth โ right around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the one that decides the size.
- Neck โ around the base of the neck, where a collar sits.
- Back length โ base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Measure over the coat, not tight to the skin. New to this? My step-by-step How to Measure Your Dog guide walks you through it ๐
Then match the chest to my jammies chart:
| Size | Chest, all the way round (cm) | Neck (cm) | Back length (cm) | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 30โ35 | 24โ27 | 23 | Toy Cavoodle pups |
| M | 34โ38 | 26โ31 | 27 | Most Toy Cavoodles |
| L | 39โ46 | 28โ31 | 32 | Big Toys and smaller Minis |
| XL | 47โ52 | 30โ38 | 37 | Most Mini Cavoodles |
Stretchy fit: each size stretches about 1โ2 cm for a comfy fit. If your pup is between sizes, choose the bigger one.
Being straight with you: my range is built for small dogs. The jammies top out at a 52 cm chest, the hoodie at 55 cm and the Dino Shirt at 57 cm. Toy and Mini Cavoodles are right in my wheelhouse ๐ฏ โ but if you've got a proper Standard Cavoodle at 12 kg+, measure first, because they may be bigger than anything I make. I'd rather tell you now than post you something that doesn't fit.
๐ฆบ And the harness?
Harness sizing is not the same as clothes sizing โ different shape, different fit points, so don't assume the letter carries across. Check it separately on my Dog Harness Size Chart by Breed ๐พ
Quick fit check once it's on: two fingers should slide under the chest strap and the neck, no more. Any rubbing under the front legs and it's the wrong size or the wrong shape.
โ Quick answers
How big do Cavoodles get?
A full-grown Cavoodle is usually 4โ12 kg and 25โ38 cm at the shoulder. Toy 4โ7 kg, Mini 7โ12 kg, Standard 12 kg and up.
At what age is a Cavoodle fully grown?
Most reach their adult weight between 10 and 12 months, with the fastest growth between 3 and 6 months.
How big will my Cavoodle puppy get?
Weigh them at 16 weeks and multiply by 2.5 for a rough adult weight. Asking the breeder the size of the Poodle parent is the more reliable answer.
What size clothes does a Cavoodle wear?
Measure the chest girth in cm and match it to the chart rather than guessing by breed. Most Toy Cavoodles are an M or L, most Minis an XL.
Do Cavoodles get cold?
Yes, especially in the weeks after a clip. The coat is the insulation, and a short summer cut takes it away.
Are Toy and Mini Cavoodles different breeds?
No. The difference is which size Poodle was used as the parent. Everything else about them is the same.
Now go measure that dog ๐
